Session III – Language Lessons

Nisha Yadav talks about the writing systems of the Indus Valley Civilization. She explains the statistical and computational techniques that are being used to decipher the Indus script.

Professor Ganesh Devy talks about how languages evolve. And how local Indian languages are dying, taking with them a treasure of historical knowledge and wisdom.

Dhanashree Pandit-Rai shows that if the 7 notes of music are common all over the world, then why do somethings sound Indian, or Japanese, or Western? She goes on to show some of the elements of Indian classical music like Khatka, Murki, Zamzama, Andolan, Aalap, Taan.

Session IV – Urbanscapes

Zubin Pastakia speaks about the Cinemas Project – which visually traces the lives of Mumbais disappearing single-screen cinema halls.

Lakshmi Tripathi – a transgender – talks about the problems she faced in her journey of self discovery to social acceptance to becoming the the first transgender to represent
the Asia Pacific in the UN.

Rahul Srivastava and Matias Echanove talk about Dharavi and slums in general. They ask the question why are alternative solutions to slums failing and what to do about it.
